چکیده

Context Quantifying the space use and movement patterns of animals is important to understand other aspects a species ecology, such as habitat social systems. However, basic data on patterns, how they are influenced by biotic or abiotic factors, lacking for many species. Aims We identified central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), assessed external factors (environmental conditions) internal (sex morphology) shape these patterns. Methods tracked 36 P. vitticeps individuals over three seasons from 2017 2018. Animals carried tags with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) device collect spatial an accelerometer in far western New South Wales, Australia. Measurements body morphology were taken each individual ambient temperatures recorded. Space was analysed calculating minimum convex polygons (MCPs) kernel density estimates (KDEs) using data. Movement determine whether dragons had moved during 10-min periods. Results Twenty-three out held defined activity areas. Males wider tails most likely be floaters (i.e. not restricted specific areas). Evidence floater behaviour shown 45% females 20% males, though both sexes often roamed distances greater than 1 km. Air strongly rates sexes. rate significantly higher males late-spring, but mid-summer, inversely related head sizes mass mid-summer. Interestingly, although there no correlation observed between daily size MCPs calculated, residents different season. Conclusions These results confirm that wild driven temperature, space-use vary previously studied agamids, high nomadism, possibly due drought conditions. Individuals varied widely their tactics, which seem unrelated size, potential proxy status age. Implications Our study provides baseline information common arid zone agamid research wild. More complex studies ecology can build findings this study.

Space Availability in Confined Sheep during Pregnancy, Effects in Movement Patterns and Use of Space

Space availability is essential to grant the welfare of animals. To determine the effect of space availability on movement and space use in pregnant ewes (Ovis aries), 54 individuals were studied during the last 11 weeks of gestation. Three treatments were tested (1, 2, and 3 m2/ewe; 6 ewes/group). Ewes' positions were collected for 15 minutes using continuous scan samplings two days/week. Tota...

Proximate causes of altitudinal differences in body size in an agamid lizard

Body size is directly linked to key life history traits such as growth, fecundity, and survivorship. Identifying the causes of body size variation is a critical task in ecological and evolutionary research. Body size variation along altitudinal gradients has received considerable attention; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we compared the growth rate and age struc...

Anthropogenic Resource Subsidies Determine Space Use by Australian Arid Zone Dingoes: An Improved Resource Selection Modelling Approach

Dingoes (Canis lupus dingo) were introduced to Australia and became feral at least 4,000 years ago. We hypothesized that dingoes, being of domestic origin, would be adaptable to anthropogenic resource subsidies and that their space use would be affected by the dispersion of those resources. We tested this by analyzing Resource Selection Functions (RSFs) developed from GPS fixes (locations) of d...

Literature in the Arid Zone

This chapter surveys and assesses from an ecocentric perspective some representative literary portrayals of the Australian deserts. Generally, it contrasts works that portray the desert as an alien, hostile, and undifferentiated void with works that recognise and value the biological particularities of specific desert places. It explores the literature of three dominant cultural orientations to...
